Fine Arts from Manuel Muñoz Gonzalez
Manuel  was born in Saraguro, a small multicultural place
located in southern highland Ecuador, surrounded by
mountains, rivers and inhabited by indigenous and mestizo
peoples with strong cultural values and traditions.

Ever since he was a child, he had the desire to express art
through his handwork.  As time passed he grew as an artist
and became the first to express the Saraguro culture through
his paintings not only in Ecuador but also in the United States.

Manuel’s paintings and sculptures reflect feelings and lives
trhough the use of different media such as pen, charcoal, oils,
pastel, pencil and clay.  The tenderness or the harshness of
the lines and colors define the grief and the happiness of the
indigenous peoples' lives.  Manuel is an artist with talent and
dedication.  He has implemented new techniques such as
wood burning and ink on wood with excellent results.

His paintings pay homage to the Indigenous people of
Saraguro and their culture.  His work is dedicated to the people
who  have undertaken new ways of progress in spite of many
difficulties. Their strong family and community based
organization and  their solid principles of Ama Shua (Do not
steal), Ama Killa (Do not be lazy), Ama Llulla (do not lie).

As the culture has its own identity, Manuel has embodied it
with pencil on paper to express the pure, authentic  nature of
the peoples’ beliefs, growth and unity.  Through his fine arts he
is strengthening the cultural knowledge not only in our people,
but also around the world because we are children of the same
“mother earth.”
